The rule that changes everything

Match the method to the weather

Temperature alone does not tell the whole story. Humidity affects evaporation, direct sun adds radiant heat, and air hotter than skin can turn ordinary airflow into heat gain.

A towel may support skin wetting, but shopping is not the priority. Research in older adults found fan use worsened cardiac strain in very hot, dry conditions.

Avoid treating 35°C or 40°C as a universal on/off switch

Fan effectiveness changes with humidity, air speed, hydration, age, activity and health. The evidence supports condition-specific guidance, not one number for every person. If you are older, dehydrated, unwell or taking medicines that affect sweating or fluid balance, use a more cautious heat plan and seek medical advice when appropriate.

The honest promise

Feeling cooler and lowering core temperature are not the same thing

Small personal devices can make a meaningful difference to comfort. That does not mean they are refrigerating the body or preventing heat illness.

Face and neck airflow, for example, can reduce local skin temperature and improve thermal sensation even when core temperature changes very little. A cold plate can feel immediately refreshing exactly where it touches. Both are legitimate benefits when described accurately.

Chapter 1

How your body loses heat

Your body is constantly balancing the heat it produces against the heat it can release. Personal cooling products influence only some parts of that balance.

Radiation

Heat moving without contact

Your body exchanges heat with nearby surfaces. Direct sun and hot roofs, roads or machinery can add radiant heat even when the air temperature looks manageable.

Convection

Heat carried by moving air

When air is cooler than skin, moving air can carry heat away. When air is hotter than skin, convection can reverse and add heat.

Conduction

Heat moving through contact

A cold plate, wet towel or cool surface draws heat from the skin it touches. The effect is local unless a much larger area is cooled.

Evaporation

Water changing into vapour

Sweat and externally applied water cool only when they evaporate. Dripping water may feel wet without delivering the same heat loss.

The practical rule

Skin is commonly around 33–35°C. As the surrounding air rises above skin temperature, dry heat-loss routes become less useful or reverse. Evaporation then becomes increasingly important—which is why humidity, hydration and airflow change the result.

Comfort versus physiology

Why cooling your face or neck can feel so effective

The head, face and neck make up a small part of the body's surface, but they are unusually important to thermal sensation. Directing air or cold contact there can produce fast, noticeable relief.

Controlled research on wearable face and neck fans found improvements in local skin temperature and comfort. Other neck-cooling studies found much larger changes at the neck than in rectal or core-temperature measures.

That is not a failure. Personal comfort matters. The key is not to turn a local sensory benefit into an unsupported whole-body medical claim.

Humidity and evaporation

Sweat only cools when it can evaporate

Relative humidity describes how close the air is to saturation at its current temperature. As the air becomes more saturated, it becomes harder for sweat or water in a cooling towel to evaporate.

Dry air

More evaporative capacity

Water can usually evaporate readily, making skin wetting and cooling towels useful. In extreme dry heat, however, very hot airflow can add more heat than evaporation removes—particularly for vulnerable people.

Moderate humidity

Airflow helps the boundary layer

Moving air replaces the warm, humid layer that forms close to skin. This is one reason a personal fan can feel much better than still air.

Very humid air

Evaporation becomes constrained

Fans may still improve sensation, but sweat and externally applied water evaporate less efficiently. A thermoelectric plate offers local contact relief that does not rely on water evaporating.

Relative humidity is not enough on its own

The same percentage means something different at different air temperatures. For outdoor work and sport, a heat-stress measure such as Wet Bulb Globe Temperature can be more useful because it incorporates humidity, temperature, air movement and radiant heat.

The fan question

When does a fan help—and when can it add heat?

A fan does not lower the outdoor air temperature. It changes heat exchange at the skin by increasing convection and helping sweat evaporate.

Why fans can help in hot, humid weather

Although humidity makes evaporation harder, faster air movement can still replace the saturated layer beside the skin. Controlled studies have found benefits in hot-humid conditions beyond older, simple fan cut-offs.

  • Best when airflow reaches skin or damp clothing.
  • Useful for local comfort around the face, neck and torso.
  • Hydration and individual vulnerability still matter.

Why fans can become unhelpful in very hot, dry air

When the air is substantially hotter than skin, faster convection pushes heat towards the body. If evaporation cannot offset that gain, strain can increase.

  • Move out of the heat where possible.
  • Prioritise shade, skin wetting and formal heat-safety actions.
  • Use extra caution for older, dehydrated or unwell people.
What the strongest practical trial found

A 2024 crossover trial in older adults tested fan use, skin wetting and the combination. In hot-humid conditions, these strategies reduced cardiac strain. In very hot-dry conditions, fan use worsened cardiac strain while skin wetting helped. The lesson is not “fans are good” or “fans are bad”; it is that the environment changes the balance.

Reading the day

Temperature, “feels like” and WBGT answer different questions

Air temperature is only one part of heat stress. It does not capture humidity, wind or radiant heat from direct sun.

Apparent temperature estimates how conditions feel to an appropriately dressed adult. The Bureau of Meteorology's public shade value incorporates temperature, humidity and wind; direct sun is not included in that displayed shade value.

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a screening tool commonly used for work and sport. It gives heavy weight to the wet-bulb component because humidity and evaporative capacity matter so much.

People are not interchangeable

Age, health, medication and acclimatisation change heat tolerance

Higher-risk groups

Older adults, babies and young children, pregnant people, people with heart or chronic conditions, and people who cannot readily move to a cooler place need more cautious advice.

Medication and hydration

Some medicines affect sweating, circulation, alertness or fluid balance. People with fluid restrictions should follow advice from their own clinician rather than generic hydration instructions.

Acclimatisation

Repeated exposure over roughly one to two weeks can improve heat tolerance, including earlier sweating and better fluid conservation. It does not make anyone immune to extreme heat.

Compare personal cooling technologies

“Cooling” can mean moving air, adding water, drawing heat into a cold surface or circulating chilled liquid. The experience, portability and evidence are different for each.

Liquid-cooling garments Circulate cooled liquid through tubing over a larger body area. Specialised medical, industrial, military and motorsport use. Strong, controllable and larger-area cooling. Bulky pumps, reservoirs, ice or battery systems; higher cost and logistics.

Portable and wearable fans

All portable fans share the same basic mechanism, but where the air lands changes how useful the device feels.

Waist and shirt fans

Push air across the torso or upward through clothing. They suit active users who need both hands free and enough battery for longer periods.

What motor and airflow specifications can tell you

  • Brushless motor: generally a useful sign for efficiency, durability and smoother operation.
  • RPM: describes motor speed, not automatically the airflow reaching the user.
  • Air velocity: useful only with the measurement distance and method.
  • Speed levels: help balance comfort, noise and battery life.

What “bladeless” actually means

Most bladeless-style personal fans still contain an internal impeller. The enclosure can reduce access to moving parts and help with hair management, but it does not automatically move more air or use less power than a well-designed visible-blade fan.

Thermoelectric cooling

What an “ice compress” or semiconductor plate really does

A thermoelectric cooler uses the Peltier effect to move heat from one side of a module to the other. The skin-facing plate becomes cold while the opposite side and its heat sink must release the pumped heat plus the electrical energy used.

The result is genuine cold-contact cooling over a small area. It can feel excellent on the neck, forehead, cheeks or wrists, particularly when air movement alone feels unsatisfying.

It does not make the outgoing fan air refrigerated, cool a room, or prove that core body temperature is falling.

Water-assisted cooling

Cooling towels, skin wetting and misting

These methods supply the water that sweat would otherwise provide. The water must evaporate to deliver the strongest cooling effect.

Cooling towel

Wet, wring and wear it around the neck, head or shoulders. It is light, battery-free and easy to refresh, especially in dry or breezy conditions.

Skin wetting plus airflow

A spray bottle, damp cloth or wetted clothing combined with a fan can increase evaporation over a larger area. This pairing has a strong practical evidence base.

Misting fan

Combines small droplets with moving air. It performs best when droplets can evaporate before simply making skin or clothing wetter.

The humidity limit

As air approaches saturation, it accepts less additional water vapour. Cooling towels and misters may still feel refreshing, but they lose much of their evaporative advantage. In those conditions, focus on airflow, shade and local contact cooling—and do not rely on a wet product as protection from heat illness.

Phase-change material

PCM packs absorb heat as they melt. Lower melting points cool harder but may be less comfortable; higher melting points usually cool more gently for longer. Once fully melted, the pack must be recharged or swapped.

Finite duration

Liquid-cooling garments

Chilled liquid circulated through a vest or top can cool a larger surface and is used in specialised medical and industrial settings. Pumps, tubing and coolant make it less convenient for everyday consumers.

Strong but bulky

Advanced textiles

Radiative, thermoelectric and adaptive fabrics are an active research field. Some materials have produced meaningful local cooling in controlled tests, but many remain prototypes rather than established mass-market products.

A wearable fan is one layer, not the heat-management system

Workplace heat risk depends on air temperature, humidity, radiant heat, workload, work duration, clothing, PPE, acclimatisation, health and access to recovery. Personal airflow can improve comfort, but it sits below broader controls.

  1. Eliminate or reduce hot work where practical.
  2. Reschedule strenuous work and rotate tasks.
