Australia summer 2026-27

Explore the summer outlook where you live

Australia is heading into summer with a strong El Nino (or even Super El Nino), but conditions could look very different depending on where you live. Select a state or tap one of the local hotspots to explore expected heat, rainfall, warmer nights and the main summer risks for your region.

El Nino Strong and established

Bureau of Meteorology declared El Nino underway on 16 June 2026.

Temperature Warmer broadly favoured

Above-average days and nights are favoured across most of Australia.

Rainfall Very regional

Much of the south-east leans drier, while parts of the north-west have a wetter signal.

Key message Heat type matters

Humid coastal heat needs a different cooling approach from extreme dry inland heat.

What this means for staying cool

Hot and humid?

Moving air can help sweat evaporate when humidity is slowing that process down. This is where portable airflow can be particularly useful for comfort, alongside shade, hydration and sensible heat precautions.

Extremely hot and dry?

Around 40°C in very dry air, do not rely on a fan alone. Skin wetting, shade, cool showers and access to a genuinely cooler space become increasingly important.

How to read this guide: Regional temperature ranges are indicative seasonal anomalies rather than exact forecasts for individual days. Confidence is stronger for the broad temperature outlook than local rainfall several months ahead. This guide reflects conditions and forecasts available as at 18 August 2026.
